A capacitive dilatometer measures a change of sample dimension by monitoring the capacitance between two parallel plates.
One of the two capacitor plates is fixed and the other plate is allowed to move accordingly as the sample changes its dimension. The resolution of our current dilatometer is about 0.1 Å.
